Its original population was made up primarily of first-and second-generation Western Europeans including people of German, Irish and Swiss descent. The population growth of Mokena up until 1930 was rather slow, with the census showing the population size to be approximately the same as 50 years earlier. Rapid growth did not occur until the 1960s, when the village was blessed with a 60% increase in population. This population increase was largely due to the annexation of empty land. Even more dramatic growth was exhibited during the 1970s with the acquisition of more land. This increase in size stimulated further population growth, with the number of residents more than tripling. Toward the end of the ’80s, nine major housing developments were underway with the projection of three additional developments. Mokena’s population continues to grow at a steady pace.
